THE TMJ METHOD

Virtual Team Meeting

The curse of expertise

The curse of expertise is a cognitive bias that occurs when an individual, who is communicating with other individuals, assumes they have the background knowledge to understand.

An expert in a subject sometimes fails to see things from a non-expert’s (student’s) point of view. TMJ teachers are trained to overcome that problem. We can sync ourselves to students’ perspectives and that helps us explain things to students very efficiently. We don’t deliver one way communication lectures. We engage students in discussions while teaching.

First time learning approach

When we teach, we keep in mind that the learner is learning the topic for the first time and we anticipate the doubts and questions that can crop up in the learner’s mind as we recall the doubts and questions when we learnt the topic for the first time.

We assist discoveries

We use sequential questioning so that the students discover the answers themselves. Sequential questioning stimulates thinking and helps students to become independent in the subject. As stated by a student “the best part I would have to say is that rather than explain the entire concept to me, the teacher allows me to figure out the topic on my own by giving me questions that lead me to the answer of my question”.
